An Opinion - Fear of Speaking?

There are many fears or phobias that people suffer from. You've got claustrophobia, arachnophobia, agoraphobia, coulrophobia, hydrophobia, trypanophobia, tonitrophobia, coprophobia, and hundreds more. Basically, you can take any word and put phobia behind it and you will find someone who claims to suffer from it.

But, the number one fear as rated by most Americans is fear of public speaking. At a recent speech someone asked me how I overcame my fear of speaking or did I still have it?

Fortunately, I do not suffer from this fear. I don't recall ever having a great fear but more of a feeling of 'not knowing' what to expect or how the experience would go.

I overcame this uneasiness by doing one thing - speaking! If you have this fear or are just uneasy, I highly recommend you join Toastmasters. This non- profit group assists thousands of people in facing their fears and learning fundamental speaking skills.

Since the group was founded in Orange county it has some excellent trainers and leaders and a formal process of achievement for those who really want to become adept.

Now, I have to confess I do have one fear. It is called slacksaquaphobia. It is little known but an insidious crippler of those it affects. It is the fear of coming out of a public restroom with a wet spot on the front of your pants.

Now that I think about it, it is probably just as bad on either side of your pants. Nevertheless, I focus on the front since I can see it too. It is kind of like a Tim Burton movie gone bad where the urinal somehow jettisons water forward, like a reverse flush, soaking my pants.

So for all of my fellow sufferers I have formed a new group to help alleviate your fears and tribulations. It is called slacksaquaphobiatesunite and can be found at slacksaquaphobiatesunite@slacksaquaphobiates.flush

and if any of you actually can find this site I have a large cash prize for you as well a t-shirt that says ""I fear slacksaquaphobiates"", the letters wrap around but it was the best I could do handwriting them.

Reprints of articles are available to media, newspapers, magazines, etc. To inquire please email: info@ichoose2be.com

No 'Yes' men -or- to tell the truth, be a Leader

I never wanted to be someone who was a 'yes' man. I wanted to tell everybody the truth even if it cost me my job.....and it did!

This is not to say I felt I had all the answers or was always right. But I have found most people are honest by chance. Think not? How many people have ever fudged an income tax filing? Answer: more than 50%

Think that is a scary number? The Josephson Institute of Ethics recently published their biannual report on youth ethics that they have been doing for 20 years.

Although there was some improvement in the numbers they were still disturbing. Of high school students polled, almost 85% admitted to lying, cheating, or stealing in the past year to get better grades. Not your son or daughter? Think again, almost no differences were noted between public and private schools, Christian schools, two parents vs one, income levels, etc.

It should also be noted that most kids reported that their parents would disapprove of their actions but they had witnessed their parents doing such things to 'get ahead'. Kids also reported that parents rationalized their behavior just as they do.

So, if you are a leader, want to be a leader, want your kids to become leaders - - - at ANYTHING. You must instill the basic principles of honesty and demonstrate them daily.

Leaders in any endeavor have to establish direction, align people and purpose, and inspire others. How can any of these be done if the leader is not seen as genuine and honest? That does not mean insensitive and harsh. One does not have to be brutally honest.

This does not mean that all of us, including leaders, do not face ethical dilemmas, we do. And we have to be conscious of differences in cultures and religions that can lead to differing opinions on some issues. However, we can not rationalize away the simple issues because others are more complex.

We can choose to tell the truth or not. What is your choice?

If you found this newsletter to be of value please pass it on to others. Your email address will NEVER be sold, rented, borrowed, leased, become part of a venture deal, well, you get the idea!
