An Opinion - Flyfishing or Podcasting?
Many of you have probably heard of the latest craze, podcasting. For those of you who are unfamiliar, it is not related to flyfishing nor anything to do with peas.
Although, there is an obscure farmer's contest in the midwest where they eat peas and toss the pods and, I am only guessing, they probably call it pod-castin'.
Of course, it is really named after the Apple i-pod and some semi-genius that figured out you could download music and talk directly to an i-pod with little difficulty.
The reason I mention this is that ABC and a few other 'known' companies just invested several hundred million dollars (yes, I said several hundred million) to become involved in this new medium.
It is estimated that by 2010 there will be more than 50-60 million users - DAILY! It is the quasi-radio version of cable TV with hundreds of channels except that podcasting is not that sophisticated, yet.
Everyone with a voice can do a podcast with almost no knowledge and little cost. As with any communication medium there will be """"selection by audience"""". Those that are good will get a following and others will die or not be heard.
The point is, if your company is one that markets anything to the public, you should be looking at this medium. There are already those who have developed a 'following' and are getting more resulting 'hits' to their websites in a week than they ever got from pay-per-click in a year. Even better, it is costing them virtually nothing to do it.
All that is needed is someone to create a Google type search engine to find what the listener wants and this medium could explode. Oh, I hear Google and others are working on this, what a shock.
Want to know who the real 'experts' are? Try the infamous 'X' rated adult industry. They were the first to figure out how to download sound and streaming video through podcasts. Gives a whole new meaning to Blue Hawaii.
