What is a POWER Team??
It starts and stops with people. One of the Trump quotes that I like (there are some I don't) is simply """"hire the best people, always"""".
If you always hire the best people your task of growing and making your business a success gets so much easier. So why don't most businesses do this?
It is simple, it does not fit the agenda at the time. Either politics, budget, inflated ego, or 'bad' beliefs lead us to underhiring and then bemoaning our choices for years to come. It isn't the person who was hired who is at fault, it is the hiring person.
But back to the first issue, politics. Company politics often inhibit proper team building and that becomes part of the hiring and selection process as well. Management and/or human resources is so worried about covering their you-know-what that they underhire to protect themselves.
#2 Budget - Here we go, another company saying that they can only budget 'X' for a position which has absolutely nothing to do with what they budget or who they should hire. I believe in budgets, but if there is a place to overspend it is in the people. Of course this is the first area to be cut in tough times. I guess my question is would you rather save $50- 100K per year or make $250K a year more? If you want to grow your business start thinking about hiring those who deliver the $250K rather than saving some salary money.
#3 Inflated Ego - There are plenty of these to go around and it comes in two forms. The Big Ego who believes that no one can know as much as they do, so anyone who challenges them can not be hired; or, it is a False Ego that is actually afraid of those with more knowledge/skill so they never hire someone who is the least bit threatening to them.
#4 Bad Beliefs - I can't remember the number of times some executive has told me they were not hired because they did not fit all the specifications of the position. In fact, in some cases no one is hired for a year or more because the specs are so ridiculous. The people that define and support these crazy specs are just that, crazy! This is the person who may be brilliant in some ways but has absolutely NO common sense.
So, avoid these common mistakes and always hire the best people. A POWER Team is one who has the best people, supported by the best leaders and the best systems, who together, take the organization to levels their competitors and most observers can not achieve or even begin to understand.
